A city with a significant historic past, Saratoga Springs has been attracting travelers to the city well before the American Revolution. Saratoga Springs first appeared on the map when wealthy pilgrims were attracted to the carbonated mineral springs running through the area. It was the grounds for decisive battles during both the American Revolution and Civil War. The Battle of Saratoga was considered the first American victory and a turning point in the Revolutionary War. In 1777, General Burgoyne of the British Army, surrendered his troops at the Battle of Saratoga. The Saratoga National Historical Park, a New York State historic preserve, now stands where the historic Battle of Saratoga was fought. The Battle of Saratoga was only one of the many historic war triumphs that took place in Saratoga Springs. During the Civil War, the Battle of Gettysburg was also fought in the area. This time period also marked another marvel in Saratoga Springs NY history: The Saratoga Racetrack was born.
The oldest thoroughbred racecourse in America, the Saratoga Racetrack opened its doors in 1863 and has been alive with horse racing every summer since its inception. The Saratoga Racetrack is not the only attraction in Saratoga; The New York City Ballet calls the city home during the summer months at SPAC.
